Scoliosis

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that creates physical defect, which can cause stiffness, back pain, numbness and tingling, headaches, digestive problems, or shoulder pain. Scoliosis is more common in girls, but boys and adults can have scoliosis too. People with scoliosis have a sideways curve in their spine that makes an “S” or “C” shape.

Scoliosis may be caused by:

  • Spinal abnormalities at birth
  • Leg-length disproportion
  • Poor posture
  • Degenerative diseases (osteoporosis)
  • Muscle spasms
  • Injuries or trauma

Identifying characteristics of scoliosis:

  • One shoulder may be higher than the other
  • One hip may appear to be more elevated than the other
  • The head is not aligned with the pelvis
  • One side of the back appears more raised than the other

Chiropractic care can often effectively stabilize and halt the progression of the scoliosis spinal deformity and help alleviate pain. Chiropractic care emphasizes a holistic, multi-faceted approach to address scoliosis utilizing spinal adjustment, Applied Kinesiology, electric muscle stimulation, therapeutic exercise, and nutritional recommendations.
