What is Chiropractic?

The diagram above illustrates how chiropractic care to the spine can effectively treat internal organ problems

Chiropractic is a holistic, non-invasive method of healthcare that treats the body as a whole entity. It was developed in the U.S. in 1895 and has been helping people recover from pain and health problems naturally, without drugs and surgery, for over 115 years.

The term “chiropractic” comes from the Greek words, “cheiro and praktikos” meaning “done by hand.” Doctors of Chiropractic (DC’s) promote the healing process by using gentle manipulations to the spine and other body structures to help the nervous system heal the body.

The brain and the nervous system control every function of the human frame. Spinal misalignments due to injuries, accidents, poor posture, etc. can pinch nerves causing pain or organ malfunctions. Chiropractic treatments can help restore normal spinal alignment and thereby eliminate pain and improve overall health.

The chiropractic model of health is centered on the philosophy that the human body will heal itself given the right stimuli.

What is the difference between Holistic Chiropractic and Tradition Medical Care?

Chiropractic helps relieve pain, stimulate, and restore the body’s natural healing capabilities by utilizing gentle manipulation or other holistic therapies in order to return the body to its normal function. For example, in treating a pinched nerve in your spine that is causing leg pain, the chiropractic approach restores the normal alignment of the spinal bone (vertebra). This treatment removes the nerve irritation and eliminates the pain.

However, traditional (allopathic) medicine treats the nerve irritation with a drug to help reduce the pain, but does not address the underlying misalignment of the spine, which is the cause of the problem. Therefore, the condition worsens, requiring more powerful medication or ultimately surgery, which could have been avoided.

Chiropractors treat the root cause of your health conditions, not just the symptoms, to successfully relieve pain, increase vitality, and restore well-being without drugs and surgery.

What conditions can Holistic Chiropractic care address?

What happens during a Chiropractic treatment?

The chiropractic doctor will use his hands to gently adjust skull bones, spinal vertebrae, or other joints of the body to remove irritation in the nervous system. Chiropractors also utilize various instruments, wedges (blocks), and the activator method as well. Patients find this an enjoyable treatment. Chiropractic, developed in the U.S. in 1895, has helped millions of people throughout the world eliminate pain and improve their quality of life naturally without drugs and surgery.

Chiropractic care is one of the safest healthcare treatments available. According to the New Zealand government’s inquiry chiropractic care is “remarkably safe.” FCER (Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research).

How long will I need Chiropractic care?

Frequency of chiropractic visits depends upon pre-existing injuries, hereditary conditions, and life-style habits. Some patients respond in a few treatments but most require a more lengthy program. Chiropractic has great success in preventing unnecessary surgery and reducing the need to take medications that often cause dangerous side effects. Chiropractic offers valuable preventive treatment and health maintenance.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help Pregnant Women?

Gentle chiropractic treatments can be very effective in helping alleviate back, leg, and neck pain that many women suffer during pregnancy.

Neck, back, and leg pain primarily occur as a result of increased weight gain and a change in the distribution of weight causing increased pressure on the spinal and pelvic muscles. These stresses also alter the normal spinal curves. The result is increased physical stress to the body leading to pain and discomfort. Additional symptoms may include headaches, nausea, and indigestion, which can also be helped with holistic chiropractic care.

Chiropractic can be performed safely throughout the entire term of pregnancy.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help Children?

Chiropractic care treats a wide range of conditions in children from headaches, growing  pains, scoliosis, and allergies to earaches and upper respiratory infections, which are the most common cause of illness in infancy and childhood.

Active children who participate in sports tend to fall, bump and bruise often. These injuries can cause back and neck pain, stiffness, and soreness. Misaligned vertebral joints can adversely affect the muscles and nerves. Chiropractic spinal adjustment relieves nerve pressure and restores range of motion.

Even the birth process is a trauma on an infant. Gentle spinal realignment is used with newborns as an alternative therapy to unpinch the nerves causing colic and other digestive disorders.

By correcting the child’s spinal alignment, chiropractic improves your child’s overall health. Most children tend to respond quickly to chiropractic care.

What training do Chiropractors receive?

The training involved to attain the degree of Doctor of Chiropractic involves an eight to nine year educational program; 4 years of pre-med college courses leading to a BA or BS from an accredited college or university, and 4-5 years of full-time chiropractic college.

Pre-Chiropractic course work includes: biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, other coursework. Chiropractic course work includes: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, microbiology, pathology, orthopedics, neurology, chiropractic treatments, physical therapy, geriatrics, nutrition, laboratory and physical diagnosis, X-Ray, MRI and CT diagnosis.

Upon graduation, chiropractors are required to pass an examination administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Chiropractors are licensed in all 50 U.S. States, in Canada, many European countries, Australia and New Zealand.
